About Mary E. D'Alton, MD
Mary E. D'Alton, MD, is the Willard C. Rappleye Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She is a globally recognized expert in maternal-fetal medicine and led efforts to develop two innovative multidisciplinary centers at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center to manage the highest risk pregnancies due to complex maternal and fetal conditions: the Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics, launched in 2010, and the Mothers Center, launched in 2018, which is a first-of-its-kind space dedicated to providing multidisciplinary care to pregnant women with medical and surgical conditions. As co-chair of ACOG District II's Safe Motherhood Initiative, Dr. D'Alton played a pivotal role in the effort to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in New York state and across the country.
Dr. D'Alton has authored or contributed to more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific and clinical publications, including the book Fetology: Diagnosis and Management of the Fetal Patient, which received the Association of American Publishers Award for Best Textbook in Clinical Medicine in 2001 and remains a standard in the field. She is co-editor of “Seminars in Perinatology” and served on the editorial board of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) journal “Obstetrics and Gynecology.”
Dr. D'Alton's leadership in advancing education, research, clinical practice, and policy in women's health has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Milstein Award, for which she was the second recipient. In 2006, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, an organization she previously served as president. Dr. D'Alton also served as president of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society; president of the New York Obstetrical Society; chair of the New England Perinatal Society, and chair of the Foundation for SMFM. Institutionally, she has served as chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief for NYP/Columbia, president of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Medical Board, and chair of the Board of Governance for the ColumbiaDoctors Faculty Practice Organization.
