About Kelly Gwathmey, MD


Dr. Kelly Gwathmey is an Associate Professor of Neurology and the Director of Clinical Trials in the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center practicing at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Gwathmey received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. She then completed her residency training in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at the University of Virginia. She completed her Neuromuscular Medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.Dr. Gwathmey is an active member of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and the Network of Excellence for ALS (NEALS.) Dr. Gwathmey's research focuses on quality-of-life instruments in acquired neuromuscular diseases such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and myasthenia gravis, delay to diagnosis in ALS, racial disparities in ALS, and environmental risk factors in ALS. She has a clinical interest in ALS and other motor neuron disorders, myasthenia gravis, and inflammatory neuropathies. She is board-certified in Neurology, Neuromuscular Medicine and certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She serves on the NEALS Executive Committee as an Investigator Representative, is co-chair of the NEALS PEACe (Patient Education and Advocacy) Committee, and is co-chair of the NEALS Recruitment, Retention, and Experience Committee. She is the chair of the AANEM Podcast Editorial Committee. She serves on the Board of Directors for the MGFA (Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America) and is also the vice chair of the MGFA Medical and Scientific Advisory Council. She was recently awarded the MG Partner of the Year award from the MGFA.
