About Ioannis Economou, MD
Dr. Economou joined the Columbia University IBD Center in 2021. He is the Associate Director of the IBD Center, Director of Clinical Trials in IBD, and the IBD Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Economou is an Associate Professor of Medicine (in Surgery) specializing in the management of patients with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Following his training, which included an Advanced IBD Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Economou joined the Yale School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. While at Yale he was actively involved in IBD education, research, and patient care. He was the Medical Director of Yale New Haven Hospital Temple Infusion Center and Medical Co-director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Temple Endoscopy Suite. After 5 years at Yale, he joined the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York at the level of Assistant Professor of Medicine. At Mount Sinai, he was the Director of the Mount Sinai Downtown IBD Center and he worked at the Feinstein IBD Clinical Center. In 2018, he moved to Chicago where he joined the Rush University IBD Center. After 3 years at Rush University Medical Center where he was the Director of Industry Sponsored Trials in Gastroenterology, he was recruited by the Columbia University IBD Center.
Dr. Economou has clinical and research experience in inflammatory bowel diseases. His main goal is to provide a personalized treatment plan to his patients. His expertise is in taking care of patients with complex cases of Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Economou offers second opinion consultations for patients with IBD.
Dr. Economou has been involved in multiple clinical research trials and is able to provide novel treatments to his patients. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national meetings. In addition to his focus in the care of patients with IBD he enjoys providing care for patients with general gastrointestinal diseases and teaching gastroenterology fellows.
