About H. John Cooper, MD
Dr. H. John Cooper is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the Division of Hip & Knee Reconstruction at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian. He specializes in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, with particular expertise in the direct anterior approach for hip replacement, robotic-assisted knee replacement, and the care of failed or painful joint replacements.
Dr. Cooper trained in the direct anterior approach beginning in 2009 and has used it for essentially all of his hip replacements since entering practice in 2012. He has performed more than 4,000 hip replacements and more than 1,000 revision hip and knee procedures. He is also recognized for his work on corrosion at modular junctions in total hip arthroplasty.
He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on joint replacement outcomes, complications, infection, implant wear and periprosthetic fracture, and has presented at national and international orthopedic meetings.
Dr. Cooper is originally from South Carolina. He graduated summa cum laude from Duke University with a degree in mechanical engineering and materials science, received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, completed his orthopedic residency at Lenox Hill Hospital, and completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive orthopaedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
