About Andrew K Chan, MD
Dr. Andrew Chan serves as Co-Director of Minimally Invasive Scoliosis Surgery and Director of Neurosurgical Spine Research.
In patient care, Dr. Chan specializes in surgeries for a variety of conditions, including spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis, spinal tumors, and degenerative spinal disease (affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine). His surgical techniques range from minimally invasive to complex.
Dr. Chan earned his medical degree at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His additional training includes a fellowship in spinal deformity and minimally invasive complex spine surgery at Duke University.
Dr. Chan is focused on improving spine surgical care via his research. He has won multiple awards for his research including: The Neurosurgery Top Spine Paper of the Year with the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS); the Stewart Dunsker Award for Best Clinical Spine Abstract at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS); and the Journalistic and Academic Neurosurgical Excellence (J.A.N.E.) and Mayfield Clinical Science Awards at the AANS/CNS Joint Section Meeting on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He also prides himself on his patient care, having received the prestigious Howard Naffziger Award for Outstanding Clinical Service while at UCSF.
