About Alexander Chalphin, MD
Dr. Alexander V. Chalphin joins the faculty at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian within the Division of Pediatric Surgery as Assistant Professor of Surgery. He is committed to thoughtful, collaborative, family-centered care of infants and children. Dr. Chalphin practices the full breadth of general pediatric surgery with expertise in pediatric colorectal surgery, bowel management, and chest wall reconstruction.
A native of Washington, DC, Dr. Chalphin received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary in Virginia before pursuing medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his general surgery residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in affiliation with Harvard Medical School. As a research fellow at Boston Children's Hospital, he studied fetal stem cell therapies for congenital malformations including myelomeningocele and gastroschisis. He then moved to New York City for his pediatric surgery fellowship at Columbia University and Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.
Dr. Chalphin has received several awards for his contributions to pediatric surgical research. He is committed to medical education of medical students, residents, and fellows. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Pediatric Surgery Association.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Chalphin is a proud husband and father of two young, rambunctious girls. He enjoys running, guitar, cooking, and following Washington, DC sports teams.
