About Alejandro Gru, MD


Alejandro Gru, MD is the Leonard C. Harber Professor of Dermatology and Director of Dermatopathology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is also the Director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship and holds a joint appointment with the Pathology & Cell Biology Department.


Dr. Gru received his MD from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. He completed his internship in Medicine and residency training in Anatomic Pathology, followed by fellowship training in Surgical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Dermatopathology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He subsequently joined the faculty at Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Dermatology prior to moving to the University of Virginia, where he was promoted to Associate Professor and then tenured Professor in the Department of Pathology. At the University of Virginia, he established the first cutaneous lymphoma multidisciplinary program and served as director of the Dermatopathology section and fellowship.


Dr. Gru is the current President of the United States Cutaneous Lymphoma Consortium (USCLC) and has led the pathology initiatives of the international study in advanced stage cutaneous lymphomas (PROCLIPI), the USCLC lymphoma registry, and more recently the International T-cell Lymphoma Project (TCP 2.0). He is an associate editor for the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and Seminars in Diagnostic Pathology. He serves on the editorial board of numerous academic journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Modern Pathology, and Histopathology, among others.
