About Ajay Gupta, MD, MS


Ajay Gupta, MD, MS, is the chair of the Department of Radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is a professor of radiology and radiologist-in-chief for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.


Dr. Gupta is a board-certified radiologist specializing in neuroradiology. He has made significant contributions to the field through his research, which is focused on the quantification of the value and accuracy of diagnostic imaging for neurological disorders and the assessment of emerging neuroimaging techniques that may improve patient care. He has applied his investigative approach across a range of neurological disorders with a focus on stroke prevention and cerebrovascular disease assessment. Dr. Gupta is the principal investigator on several current and prior research projects supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and his contributions to imaging research have been published in more than 200 peer-reviewed articles.


Dr. Gupta previously served as vice-chair for research in the Department of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, as well as the neuroradiology fellowship director at Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian. He continues to teach and mentor a diverse range of clinical and scientific trainees.


Dr. Gupta earned his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was inducted to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society upon graduation. Following his internship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, he completed a Diagnostic Radiology Residency and Neuroradiology Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in Clinical & Translational Investigation from the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences.


Dr. Gupta has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research and the Robert C. Watson Award for Teaching Excellence in Radiology. He currently serves as a senior editor for the American Journal of Neuroradiology.
