About Michael L. Knudsen, MD
Michael L. Knudsen, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, providing comprehensive surgical care for shoulder and elbow conditions in New York City and Westchester. His practice includes shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repair and revision surgery, shoulder instability and labral repair, fracture care, and elbow surgery, with particular expertise in complex shoulder reconstruction and primary and revision shoulder replacement.
Dr. Knudsen performs anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement for advanced shoulder arthritis, rotator cuff deficiency, fractures, and other complex shoulder conditions. He also evaluates patients with painful or failed prior shoulder replacements, glenoid deformity or bone loss, and persistent problems after previous shoulder surgery. He incorporates advanced imaging and CT-based three-dimensional planning into patient-specific surgical planning and complex reconstruction when appropriate.
His comprehensive shoulder practice also includes repair of rotator cuff tears, treatment of massive or failed rotator cuff tears, recurrent shoulder instability and dislocation, labral injuries, instability associated with glenoid bone loss, and traumatic shoulder injuries. His elbow practice includes arthroscopic, tendon, ligament, and fracture surgery. Dr. Knudsen welcomes complex second opinions for patients considering shoulder or elbow surgery or experiencing persistent problems after a previous operation.
Dr. Knudsen completed orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota and advanced fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian. His sports medicine experience includes previous team-physician roles with the Minnesota Twins, St. Paul Saints, University of Minnesota Athletics, New York Yankees, and Columbia University Athletics. He currently serves as Assistant Team Physician for Iona University Athletics.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Knudsen instructs Columbia orthopedic surgery residents and shoulder-and-elbow fellows. His academic work focuses on shoulder arthroplasty, complex reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability, fractures, and sports-related shoulder and elbow injuries. He has authored or coauthored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. He is Section Head ofJBJS Clinical Classroom–Shoulder & Elbow, serves on the AAOS Shoulder & Elbow Program Committee and ASES Education Committee, and serves as faculty for national courses in shoulder arthroplasty and revision surgery.
